This day in history - March 13th


1781 - German born British astronomer and composer William Herschel discovered the planet Uranus while in the garden of his house in Bath Somerset, England, thinking it was a comet

Must have been a very clear night in order for Herschel to see Uranus all the way from his garden.  Above is a picture that shows Uranus in comparison to Earth. As you can see Uranus is considerably larger in both mass and scale. Uranus is blue.
